See The Best AW23 Campaigns

Just in time for the September glossies to hit newsstands, brands far and wide have began releasing their AW23 campaigns. From Miu Miu’s all star cast to Burberry’s road trip across the British Isles, we pick our favourite fashion ads of the season.

Burberry

Backdropped by the wild, open landscapes of the Isle of Skye, Scotland, with its rolling hills, glacial striations and windswept rock formations, as well as the ancient beauty of Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland, Burberry’s winter 2023 campaign is a vision. Photographed and filmed by Tyrone Lebon, the campaign spotlights Daniel Lee’s debut collection for the British heritage brand. Taryn Snyder

ANDREAS KRONTHALER FOR VIVIENNE WESTWOOD

The AW23 campaign, shot by Juergen Teller, was a family affair filmed by Vivienne Westwood’s brother Gordon Swire, with casting done her son Ben Westwood. Shoot in Westwood’s hometown, Tintwistle, the team started at Westwood’s birthplace no.6 Millbrook, Hollingworth where her granddaughter, Cora Corré posed, moving through the backyards of relatives, and concluded at the grave of the late designer. EMPORIO ARMANI

For autumn/winter, Emporio Armani finds itself in the Big Apple. Shot by Gregory Harris against an aerial view of Manhattan, the cinematic black and white images capture models in moments of power and expression while referencing imagery from Emporio Armani’s archive. TS

CHANEL

In a film directed by Kourtrajmé, with photography by Malick Bodian, Chanel’s AW23/24 pre-collection campaign is centred around actress and model, Iman Perez. The imagery sees Perez captured in Paris, Dakar and New York, where she divides most of her time. TS

PRADA

The five cinematic stars, Benedict Cumberbatch, Hunter Schafer, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Letitia Wright and Li Xian, face human-sized flowers in a film scripted by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Cunningham and images shot by Willy Vanderperre. The men’s and women’s campaign In Conversation with a Flower metaphorically uses this flora to represent values of beauty, care, and love. TS

FENDI

This season, Kim Jones looked to the wardrobe of Delfina Delettrez Fendi for inspiration, having been particularly fascinated how the jewellery designer styles Fendi pieces from the 1990s and early ’00s. The campaign, shot by by Craig McDean, features strong tailoring, powder blue knits and the house’s new Origami handbag. TS

BALENCIAGA

Under construction, Balenciaga’s campaign takes place inside the brand’s newly decorated creative headquarters at 10-12 Avenue George V – where Cristóbal Balenciaga opened the brand’s Paris home in 1937 and Demna presented his first couture collection in 2021. TS

MIU MIU

With photography by Zoë Ghertner, styling by Lotta Volkova and creative direction by Edward Quarmby, Miu Miu Live! stars a loaded cast including Emma Corrin, Mia Goth, Zaya Wade, Ethel Cain, Zhao Jinmai, Amelia Gray, and Annabelle Weatherly, who each stalk a completely grey studio. TS

LOEWE

Blooming in blurred ambience, David Sims captures Tang Wei and Taylor Russell suspended in time for Loewe’s latest womenswear campaign. Respectively, the Chinese and Canadian actors sport the London label’s AW23 collection, exuding sensual femininity through their floral duchesse satin dresses, cartoon-y bonded-nappa skirts and Puzzle totes. It’s a surrealist fantasy – one we’re hungry to immerse ourselves in. Emily Phillips

Inspired by the artwork of Julien Nguyen, Loewe’s AW23 menswear campaign is stripped back to still-life images of actor Jamie Dornan and singer-songwriter Omar Apollo. With the gaze turned to these two figures, photographer David Sims explores the silent communication of body gestures. TS

VALENTINO

Photographed by the acclaimed Steven Meisel, the maison’s campaign showcases Valentino’s community via group portraits of models adorning the new collection. The accompanying film follows a long line of tables as the models lean in, absorbed in chatter, while two beautiful faces sit daringly, staring at the camera. TS

DIOR

For the men’s campaign shot by Rafael Pavarotti, Kim Jones pulls inspiration from the movement between the Thames to the Seine in a meeting between the purity of the black and grey backdrop and the sophistication of the clothing. When it comes to the womenswear campaign, creative director, Maria Grazia Chiuri, draws her from the shapes of the 1950s and the house’s connection with Catherine Dior, Édith Piaf, and Juliette Gréco – manifesting in powerful shots of models illuminated against bold backgrounds of colourful orbs by Brigitte Niedermair. TS

GIVENCHY

Pulling from the the house’s own archives from the 1950s and ‘60s, Givenchy’s women’s campaign is cultivated by creative director Matthew M. Williams to imbue the brand’s contemporary elegance of confidence, comfort, and empowerment. Shot by Heji Shin, the sharp construction and magnified volumes of the collection are seen across an elegant cast who pose against a wood-toned backdrop. EP

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN

Alexander McQueen’s AW23 campaign is a star-spangled array of razor-sharp tailoring and punk glamour gowns. David Sims casts his camera upon Naomi Campbell, Elle Fanning (making her campaign debut for the luxury London label), Liu Wen, Eva Green, Yseult, Eliott De Smedt Day, Karolina Spakowski and Momo Ndiaye – beautifully bold against a solid backdrop. EP

SAINT LAURENT

Kate Moss has long been loved by Saint Laurent, storming the runway for Tom Ford a slew of times in the ’00s and sporting Hedi Slimane’s YSL in the 2010s, but now she’s back and cosying up to her mate Anthony Vaccarello, who’s made her the face of the house for Fall 2023.

Lensed by Gray Sorrenti – who steps into a role usually reserved for David Sims – Moss is stripped back and fresh faced with her luscious blonde locks swept cavalierly back. In a modest, off-the-shoulder gown with ruching around the waist, cosmic teardrop earrings and a Romanesque wrist cuff, she’s the embodiment of modern elegance. EP

GIORGIO ARMANI

Paolo Roversi captures French actor Louis Garrel and a trio of sophisticated models inside Giorgio Armani’s AW23 campaign. It’s a play of chiaroscuro, where shadows and reflections dance upon their timeless attire and assured expressions, evolving into a perfect distillation of Armani style. It’s a way of life more so than a way of dressing. It’s elegance embodied. EP

JIMMY CHOO

Superstars in a cityscape. Thats the DNA of Jimmy Choo’s AW23 campaign, a high octane urban adventure embodying the duality of day to night dressing. Lensed by Stas Komarovski and Mikael Jansson respectively, amidst the concrete labyrinth of Paris, K-Pop sensation and global brand ambassador Mi-Yeon and top model Rebecca Longendyke are a vision of Neo-punk elegance. With Choo’s Diamond family taking centre stage, new Diamond, Bon Bon Bucket and Avenue Quad XS bag iterations are displayed, alongside a new slingback loafer and a studded leather healed stomper. But these Jimmy Choo’s were made for walking, so the fluctuating moments frozen in the photos lurch to life with a series of confident short films you won’t want to miss. EP

GUCCI

Leave it to Gucci to gift us with a high-octane AW23 campaign. David Sims captures Vittoria Ceretti, Aboubakar Konte and Brando Erba against a distinctive army green backdrop with an elevator, reminiscent of the set of the women’s show that took place back in February, all sporting a series of signature silhouettes in ready-to-wear and accessories drawn from recent eras of the house. Centre stage is the Gucci Horsebit Chain bag, the atelier’s latest archival reprisal, decked in padded leather, shearling, crystal and contrast-leather. First introduced by Tom Ford in 2003, the side piece is now defined by a maxi version of its iconic Horsebit clasp, re-contextualized from Aldo Gucci’s 1953 loafer embellishment. BALMAIN

Olivier Rousteing collaborated with photographer Rafael Pavarotti for Balmain’s AW23 campaign. Channelling the hushed atmosphere of its founder’s – Pierre Balmain’s – intimate post-war couture salon presentations, it focuses on the maison’s Parisian heritage and exceptional craftsmanship. To achieve this ambience, no props, dream locations, nor CGI are featured, it simply builds upon Balmain’s bold and enduring ‘New French Style’. Pavarotti’s genius use of light, colour and texture, highlight the atelier’s precise craftsmanship and cuts, whilst the bold tones, lustrous shine and ethereal models capture the essence of the house’s contemporary style. At that, the campaign honours the traditions and expertise of couture whilst simultaneously bringing in the illustrious beauty of twenty-first century Paris. Joe Benham

ALAÏA

Alaïa’s Summer Fall 2023 campaign was lensed within the hallowed halls of Pieter Mulier’s home in Antwerp – the same location where his svelte Autumn ensembles made their initial catwalk outings back in January. With Tyrone Lebon behind the camera, the campaign is an intimate affair featuring models Mica, Julia and Anok, who personify the powerful Alaïa woman envisioned by Mulier. Under the raw and illuminating Flemish sunlight, the garments became a second skin – an amalgamation of ease, sultriness and simplistic chic, encapsulating Alaïa’s vision of natural beauty and its unique family spirit. The clothes, like the space, are personal, designed to the body, reminding us that the home is a central part to the brand. JB

FILA

Fila just teamed up with its newest global ambassador Hailey Bieber – who will collaborate with Fila to design signature sportswear collections, with the first drop slated to launch in autumn/winter 2024 – alongside tennis superstar Reilly Opelka, to front its AW23 campaign celebrating the 50th anniversary of the company’s distinguishable F-Box logo. First presented in 1973, when the sportswear giant introduced colour to the tennis court, it is a symbol of the brand’s influence in sport, style and the individuals that represent its values. Photographed by Renell Medrano and styled by Dani Michelle and Bieber herself, select styles of the F-Box Anniversary Collection are worn throughout the campaign. Tennis-inspired pieces are prevalent and blend both archival and contemporary; Reilly especially epitomises Fila’s spirit of boldness and creativity. Spotlighting the versatility of the collection, the designs will take wearers from court-to-street. You could say that it served an ‘ace’ – that’s tennis terminology! JB

VALENTINO

Pierpaolo Piccioli has done it again. His latest venture at Valentino – The Black Tie Campaign – hones in on the the grittier skinny black ties worn during the Two-Tone movement for an unapologetic expression of identity and power. Stripping the classic fashion accessory of its masculine connotations, Piccioli revitalises it with a modern sense of rebellion and confidence, subverting its symbolism as a signifier of male power by putting it on everyone. Shot in New York – cue ’80s Wolf of Wall Street yuppies – by renowned photographer Steven Meisel, the campaign captures an unflinchingly intimate portrait of a new genderless gusto. Kaia Gerber is Piccioli’s muse for the campaign, and she boldly embraces the unexpected looks by injecting a punk attitude – she’s completely unfazed by social conventions. Shop the collection hereJB

GUESS USA

If you’re looking for an outfit that merges Wild West fantasies and grunge raver energies, try Guess’ autumn/winter 2023 drop. Designed by Nicolai Marciano, the collection revolves around Americana style codes – expanding upon the rustic, vintage-style denim and cracked leather integral to the first two chapters of Guess USA’s story, this chapter puts an intense focus on silhouette, toying with shapes and proportions. Leather-like cracked denim cascades across flared and baggy jeans, with embellished detailing and perforated lace panels, frayed denim jackets and lace-up jeans. Faux fur is seen alongside hedonistic mini skirts and corsets – hello Woodstock! – weathered western-inspired accessories and suede down jackets.

The accompanying campaign is deliciously spearheaded by Eli Russel Linnetz who captures a rough all-American vision of the collection. “The female lead is unearthing the past; clothes that had been stored away for a long time now emerge from crates and are now entering the world after being hidden away,” he describes. DSQUARED2

A high-intensity film directed (and photographed) by Steven Klein serves as Dsquared2’s AW23 campaign. Reuniting with longtime collaborator and lauded creative director Giovanni Bianco to bring the spirit of playful indulgence vividly to life, the pair dive into youthful fantasy. Through a  candid, campy study of jocks, geeks, goths and emos, lensed like a window to a chill hangout amongst young friends, Dan and Dean Caten’s Y2K-ified western wet dream wardrobe will have you gagging to get your hands on it. Social-media superstar Jean Carlo Jashlem and it-girl photographer and filmmaker Nadia Lee Cohen appear alongside Issa Lish Gianluca Molin and others wearing skimpy Daisy Dukes and low slung jeans, fur lined afghan coats, slogan trucker caps, fringed jackets and cropped baby tees. LOUIS VUITTON

In the city of love, Louis Vuitton presents its AW23 womenswear campaign. Starring brand ambassadors Deepika Padukone, Hoyeon, Léa Seydoux, and actor Elaine Zhong – captured by photographer Ethan James Green and filmed by director Quentin Saunier – each LV muse portrays their own vision of femininity through sophisticated looks from the autumn/winter 2023 collection. By their sides are a slew of beautiful branded bags – the perfect companion for a summer spent wandering along the scenic Sein. Simple, but timeless, Léa Seydoux’s choice of bag fell on The Capucines, the iconic Louis Vuitton design, featuring brand’s exceptional savoir faire, that pays tribute to the opening of its first store in 1854.
