Aside from the clothes, the first thing you remember from a legendary fashion show is its soundtrack. Inside 10 Magazine Issue 74, we spotlight 10 musicians and sound engineers who are adept in masterminding catwalk scores that have gone on to become certified fashion moments in their own right. Next up, Hakushi Hasegawa.
Best known for their striking soundtracks to Noir Kei Ninomiya shows, Hasegawa also works with Tetsuro Kitada and Jana Dahmen from Tokyo fashion store Mode no Higeki and designer Keisuke Nagami, who runs the ‘liminal wear’ Hatra brand.

What’s your approach to creating a fashion show soundtrack?
I guess there is nothing very special [happening] when I attempt to do it. If I had to pick words, I would say that I believe I must maintain the attitude of referring to the multifaceted nature of those clothes in my music.
How do you work with a designer?
It’s hard to describe the ‘how’. It is certainly instantaneous. As soon as I see the clothes, I have to respond with music. It might be similar to sports.
Which track or artists have you used the most?
So far, everything is original.
Which musical fashion show moments stand out for you?
I would like to say every single moment, but so far, the moment when the show closes is often the most memorable for me. I feel that it is also the part of the show I should focus on when I work on it.
What music genres define you?
That is actually difficult to answer. Because I am in the middle of a crossroads.
What’s one fashion show you wish you’d created the soundtrack for?
I was thinking of Maison Martin Margiela’s SS01, Orimi’s SS25, Bernhard Willhelm’s SS04, writtenafterwards’ SS18, the recent show in Japan by Bless, etc., but you asked me to pick only one. Sorry, I cannot choose.
Which designer has the best musical taste?
Tetsuro Kitada!
