After only three on-schedule catwalk shows, Marine Serre’s vision is as clear as today’s sunny day in Paris. Sporty, futuristic, empowering. The place where Serre comes from is the one of utter modernity – ideas she comes up with seem to be changing the zeitgeist as they walk on the catwalk. This is what we will be thinking about, this was we will be wearing. Or so we hope.
Her signature element – a mini lunar crescent – was back in focus today, referencing her breakout collection, one that earned her the 2017 LVMH Prize. This time round though, it wasn’t just printed all over lycra – it came printed on denim, subtly with dual tones as well as in a whole variety of more abstract artwork. Serre has previously stated she likes the lunar crescent because it’s a “symbol that evolves” and one that carries different interpretations in each different culture. Embracing the moon’s cultural versatility, her AW19 collection represented a rebellious spirit, taking pieces from the outcasts to the world into creating her own generation of tomorrow. Punk tartans, hi-vis neons, shaggy faux furs and balaclavas all shaped the silhouettes which came through in more variety than before. The final section featured looks that were embellished with found objects – coins, scarves, earrings and other bric-a-brac. This is a techno tribe we want to be a part of.
