The fashion world’s love for nostalgia is never ending, every season a new decade is rehashed and revisited in some way. The same has been happening with the faces parading down the catwalks. It’s not a new thing, but for the past year or so, bringing back models of days-gone-by has exploded. Especially after Dries Van Noten celebrated his 100th Show for AW17 by sending women from all of his past shows down the runway. It goes hand in hand with the changing attitude towards diversity on the runway.
The following are our Top Ten (listed in alphabetical order because we like to play fair). First is Guinevere Van Seenus, an icon of the 90’s-00’s and star of a very special issue of 10 Magazine, where she was literally the only model in the whole issue. The etherial Karen Elson appeared on the catwalk for The Row and Michael Kors this season, and most recently for Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda. Kirsty Hulme, Scottish 90’s supermodel, opened The Row, and made our hearts glad. Liya Kebede sat front row at every show she didn’t walk, because she’s just so fabulous. Natalia Vodianova, Raquel Zimmermann and Sasha Pivovarova, all part of the early 00’s doll faced model phenomenon, haven’t been gone from the runway long, but we welcome them back with open arms every time. Stella Tennant is a living legend who changed the face of supermodels in the 90’s and returned to walk Alexander McQueen this season. Tasha Tilberg was the surprise return of the season- a fellow Canadian whose androgynous look was everywhere back in the day. Vlady Roslyakova, another key member of of the 00’s doll face clan, has been a staple for The Row for quite a few seasons, but for AW18 she made her come back in multiple shows in all the fashion capitals including Nina Ricci and Badgley Mischka. The new face is still very much a ‘thing’ each season but the new ’not-so-new’ is something that is quickly becoming the new normal. We love it.
