New Margiela Exhibition In Antwerp Explores His Time At Hermès

Margiela

We all know Martin Margiela. Not, we should note, personally. Don’t know if you’ve heard, but he’s quite hard to find. Rather, we refer to the elusive designer’s work under his eponymous label, Maison Martin Margiela. Less known, though, is his work for the house of Hermès in the late 1990s – not that it isn’t bloody brilliant, as this new exhibition Margiela – The Hermès Years proves, but because, for some reason, the six year period as Creative Director has got a bit lost in the fashion sands of time. But now, the MoMu Museum in Antwerp (the city where the designer studied in the late 70s) will highlight the importance of his work as Creative Director of the Parisian House, taking us through his twelve collections there – showing how his was responsible for defining the ‘new’ Hermès, one that eschewed the excess of the 1980s, and how that work came to influence what would be the latter years designing under his own name at MMM. Well worth the schlep to Belgium, we say.

Margiela – The Hermès Years will be on show at MoMu, Antwerp, March 31st-August 27th, 2017
