Teatum Jones: Ready-to-wear AW17

Straight from the opening speeches, held this morning at London Fashion Week’s new home at 180 The Strand, it became clear that London has a lot to say, and the fashion world has an important voice. Natalie Massenet, Caroline Rush and Sarah Mower all spoke emotively about the diversity and opportunities in London, and the need to stand up and be counted in the uncertain world we live in. Buoyed by their words, and a sense of the freedom of speech that the fashion industry celebrates, we headed straight to the first show of the season, Teatum Jones, who literally vocalised this message with a soundtrack that told us ‘We are perfect because of our imperfections’. Their starting point for the collection was the work of Hans Bellmer, and his ‘doll project’ which he created to oppose the fascism of the Nazi Party and the cult of the perfect body. Read into this what you will about the current political climate. Taking this inspiration point, they experimented with construction to piece together coats and dresses with sheer panels and layers, and played with silhouettes to create exaggerated length on sleeves and collars, and used strapping and lacing to customize shapes to the individual’s body. The womens and menswear collections were shown together as one cohesive collection, with their stand out knitwear providing a high point. Perfect starting point for a Fashion Week season that promises to celebrate the diversity and individuality of the industry – London, we salute you.
