The Thom Browne spring/summer 2021 collection came to us live from 239,000 miles above the earth, in the year 2132. A modern master of pure fashion fantasy, Browne cracked the ‘phygital’ fashion week experience by making his own Lunar Olympic games. Inspired by his own trip to the Montreal Olympics with his family in 1976, the designer staged his grand event in Los Angeles Coliseum – featuring mass crowds each sporting his signature cropped grey suits.
Hosted by Jordan Firstman and Grace Mahary, the most fashionable sporting event of the year featured an array of tailored looks which each came in shades of white, ivory and pale yellow. Dotted with elongated suits made from the finest of seersuckers, structural coats with hand-beaded embellishments and deconstructed trench coats transformed into dresses – Browne was adamant to create a collection where menswear is crafted as women’s wear, and vice-versa.
Things got extra-terrestrial when a giant spaceship in the shape of the designer’s dog, Hector, flew into the stadium before beaming down the official torchbearers, who commenced the beginning to the games by lighting the flame with a Thom Browne-stamped lighter. Hector also comes in handbag form. Think of it as your piece of memorabilia of the games that never was. Move over Tokyo 2021, you’ve got stiff competition.
