Nicolas Ghesquière Steps Behind the Lens for Louis Vuitton’s AW20 Campaign

It’s fair to say that Nicolas Ghesquière has well and truly trumped all our lockdown hobbies. Whilst we’ve been failing at outdoor exercise and poorly baking banana bread, the creative director has picked up the camera – and it turns out he’s rather good at it, as well. No surprises there, then. Following on from Pierpaolo Piccioli, who photographed Valentino’s Resort 2021 collection himself, Ghesquière has put his favourite hobby to the test by photographing Louis Vuitton’s AW20 campaign. For the project, Ghesquière invited a cohort of his LV family and friends to his photography studio on the Quai Voltaire in Paris. The eclectic cast includes World champion sprinter Dina Asher-Smith, actresses Stacy Martin, Marina Foïs, Noémie Merlan and Léa Seydoux, as well as models Akon Changkou and Sora Choi.

“I thought it would be interesting to extend my work to photography, to follow through to the end of the creative process and give the collection its final punctuation,” explained Ghesquière. “In this portrait gallery, everyone is there for my own personal reasons, and I liked discovering new connections with people I knew already. I also wanted to bring unity to different aspects of the house, a circular vision of what happens here.” Each personality can be seen sporting the time-travelling AW20 fashions, which feature matador jackets, Motorcross trousers and puffy, tiered skirts. You don’t have to be a time lord to release these are smashing clothes, worn by a rather spectacular group of women.
