What watch are you wearing?
It’s a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date. It’s quite monochromatic: a stainless-steel case on a stainless-steel bracelet with a tonal grey dial.
Tell us about it.
It’s a very classic and simple watch – the farthest thing from anything that’s statement-making. I like that it’s so neutral and unassuming that it almost recedes into the background.
How did you come to own it?
This watch marked a milestone, a moment of self-gifting. I bought it more than 20 years ago when I landed a leadership role at a new men’s fashion magazine. The job felt like an arrival and I wanted to celebrate the occasion.

What’s the story behind it?
I had worn a rather utilitarian watch for most of my life but had never owned a finer timepiece. I wanted a watch that would grow along with me, something that would gain a history and meaning for me over time. A future heirloom, I guess.
What do you love about it and why is it your favourite?
It’s equal parts elegant and refined, sporty and casual, and quite timeless – sorry! – in its presentation. Its smaller size and scale are also in nice proportion to my relatively slender wrist.
When do you wear it and what do you wear it with?
I truly wear it all day, every day, except when sleeping, showering or swimming. It’s always with me, so I needed a watch that I could truly pair with everything.
What would be a dream watch for you to own?
I have always loved the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Classic on a black croc strap. I’d love to have the reverse side engraved with a monogram or a favourite quote.
