Hannah Martin On The Giant Punk Pin Earring She Never Takes Off

Every piece of jewellery has a tale to tell. For the dazzling women featured in this Me and My Jewellery story, their treasured gems spill stories of their loves, tastes, families and, most of all, reveal a lot about themselves.

My Giant Punk Pin Earring is very dear to me, and I wear it every day, without fail, with anything and everything. It comes from my collection A New Act of Rebellion, which marked a turning point for me in my creative journey – it was where I felt I had finally and fully found myself.

I felt very powerful as I was creating it, and so the pieces lend me that sense of power when I wear them. The earring I wear is the very first one we made, so it is extra precious. I love it for what it stands for and also because you can literally wear it with anything and it makes a statement. It is definitely a conversation starter, even if I am wearing it with my workout clothes!

And the other very important piece to me is the Unchained Ring, from the same collection, and again a piece I wear daily, with everything. It’s quite a personal story actually. I had designed the ring, and I loved it, but hadn’t made one for myself. I split with my ex-husband some years before this collection, but I was still wearing my engagement ring, which I had designed and made, and I did love it. But at some point, when I felt all sorts of things were not going well in the relationship side of my life, I thought perhaps a change in energy on my ring finger was needed – and this was the ring I chose. Again because, for me, it holds a real sense of power.

And interestingly enough, once I had switched [the engagement ring] out, things did start to flow again! This ring is my absolute Ring of Power – I feel lost if I leave the house without it. Also, it just looks cool AF and feels amazing to wear.

My dream piece of jewellery – which is always a tough question for a very picky jewellery designer – would be a big ring by Suzanne Belperron, or a Bone Cuff in yellow gold by Elsa Peretti. My two jewellery heroes.
