Tyler the Creator in Golf Le FleurDespite happening under a veil of sorrow and sadness of losing Kobe Bryant as one of the most legendary basketball players in all history, last night’s Grammy Awards were a celebratory event. In fact, Grammys always carry a sort of nostalgic sensibility, especially with numerous tribute performances which take place on the stage each year. The 2020 version was no different, with tributes to Bryant, Nipsey Hussle, Prince and Dr. John all bringing a highly emotional note to the ceremony. The nostalgia was also reflected on the red carpet, with plenty of throwback fashion moments bringing us the va-va-voom of the old-school glam. But who took home the most important Award of best dressed?
The biggest winners of the night were Billie Eilish and her brother-slash-producer Finneas, each going away with five golden statues. And making sure her look stood as high up as her talent, Eilish trusted Gucci’s team with her custom-made, now signature oversized twinset look. The red carpet version came in black velvet emblazoned with green crystals in the GG monogram, layered under a blouson-sleeved turtleneck and accessorised with matching nails and a facemask. Also bringing the sparkle was actor, musician and all-round style icon Billy Porter who brought the Elton John levels of drag with his custom Baja East lurex onesie and plenty of bugle-bead fringing. A hat that shimmies and mechanically opens up to reveal a Cleopatra-esque make-up story underneath added that extra Porter touch we love. On the other side of the style spectrum were the K-pop sensation BTS who went for a tale of modern minimalism courtesy of Daniel Lee’s Bottega Veneta. Our favourite from the bunch of neutral hues was Jimin’s leather-topped trench-coat in a perfect shade of chocolate brown. Yummy…
Repping the Brits on the carpet was FKA Twigs who worked with her long-term collaborator and ex-Fashion East designer Ed Marler to create a one-off piece which subtly paid homage to Prince and announced Twigs’ performance alongside Usher in tribute to the legendary singer. The trouser-gown hybrid was a bit Victorian, a bit Edwardian, and a lot of fabulous. Even though she went home without a Grammy despite her five nominations, Gabriella Wilson aka H.E.R. was definitely one of our winners. In a maxi floral kimono tied with a gold-leather obi-style belt courtesy of the Dsquared2 boys and their SS20 collection, she was easy, breezy, beautiful and every part the Cali girl she is – sunnies included.
Coming in fresh off the catwalk was Orville Peck and his dripping-in-crystals Dior getup by Kim Jones, completed with a signature fringed face-mask and cowboy hat. Who knew Judy Blame was also a rodeo icon? Speaking of icons, there’s Lizzo and Iggy Pop. The former is a ground-breaking musician of the new guard with a personality to match, while the latter is a timeless rock legend who never stops to push forward. Both had their moment to shine on last night’s red carpet – Lizzo gave her best Marilyn in a custom Atelier Versace corset gown with a faux fur stole, while Iggy went for catwalk Gucci – a slate grey three-piece suit, sans shirt but worn with sparkly sandals. The carpet was literally on fire from sex-appeal thanks to these two.
Going for something slightly more subdued was Maggie Rogers, who completed her starry Chanel number with with a CC bottle pouch she carried on the carpet in place of a bag. Staying hydrated without single-use plastic can look very glam indeed. And when it came to practical accessories we aren’t used seeing at award ceremonies, Tyler the Creator brought it. Looking like out of one of Wes Anderson’s flicks, the musician wore a custom lobby boy uniform in soft pink and a vintage-style suitcase which he posed with open, showing off its stylish contents. Everything was Golf Wang, of course – Tyler’s own brand originally launched in 2011 and still selling out. We’re sold on it too.
