Karl Lagerfeld Is The Subject Of The Met’s Next Exhibition

Three years following his death, it has been unveiled that Karl Lagerfeld will be the subject of the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s 2023 exhibition. In a press conference held by Anna Wintour and The Met’s Andrew Bolton in Paris this morning, it was announced that Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty will open May 5 and will explore the breadth of the late designer’s 65-year career in fashion.

Lagerfeld is the third solo designer to have a Met exhibition curated by Andrew Bolton in tribute of, following Alexander McQueen (2011) and Rei Kawakubo (2017).

Described as Bolton as an “essay” – Lagerfeld famously declared “I dislike retrospectives” at the press conference for the Chanel show at Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2005, before refusing to turn up to the actual exhibition – the show will focus on how Lagerfeld’s sketches came to life.

The exhibition will feature approximately 150 pieces whittled down from 5,000+ garments sourced from Lagerfeld’s tenures at Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi and Chanel, as well as his eponymous brand. The sketches and designs will be accompanied by interviews with the heads of each brand’s atelier.
