Despite the whole industry going into a frenzy over the legendary Jean-Paul Gaultier declaring the end of his career as we know it, it seems like we can now finally turn that frown upside down. As announced today, Gaultier’s Haute Couture will actually continue, but with a whole new concept. Instead of Gaultier himself creating the collections, he will be hosting a different guest designer each season who will offer their own take on his rich archives of 50 years and present a show with their individual take on the iconic name. The first one to cut, twist and re-paste Gaultier’s heritage will be Chitose Abe, the founder of deconstructive Japanese label Sacai.
“The idea of different designers interpreting one Haute Couture brand came to me in the nineties for a Parisian Haute Couture House who found itself without a designer,” says Gaultier of the move. The collection will be shown in July 2020 during Paris Haute Couture Week, and will mark not only a new beginning for the JPG brand, but also a reinforcement of a new dialogue that seems to be leading the industry. Leaving their egos on the side, some of the industry’s best are proving two are better than one – Raf and Miuccia, Fear of God and Zegna, and now Sacai and Jean Paul Gaultier. To say we’re excited would be an understatement…
