Oscars might have been and gone, but the most important ceremony of the year is still yet to happen. As announced today, the London-based jewel maven Rosh Mahtani will be honoured with The Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design at the upcoming London Fashion Week. After Richard Quinn in 2018 and Bethany Williams last year, Mahtani was chosen as the 2020 winner for her unique approach to traditional craftsmanship of jewellery making and her sustainable work at her Hatton Garden-based brand Alighieri.
In less than five years, she has turned a romantic idea of modern heirlooms inspired by Dante Alighieri’s literature into a booming business at the forefront of a revolution, changing the nature of the otherwise super exclusive industry. “Mahtani has managed to translate her passion for jewellery and storytelling into a highly successful business while using responsibly sourced materials. Her ethical approach and commitment to local manufacturing, combined with her ability to make beautiful, timeless, made by hand jewellery, makes her an inspiration for many young British designers. We are incredibly proud to recognise Mahtani and look forward to seeing her business grow,” says Caroline Rush of the British Fashion Council.
And who better to hand Mahtani the award than the OG rebel of the royal family – Anne, Princess Royal. The ceremony will take place on Tuesday, February 18th, at a LFW event where Alighieri will also showcase their new collection for AW20. Cheers to the win!
