Stay Wild
Listen up people, climate change is real and frankly, you should be terrified. With the BBC reporting that the next 18 months will be critical in tackling the global heating crisis – we need to take serious action. Merely retweeting statistics surrounding fast fashion overconsumption or sharing posts on Facebook condemning fossil fuel C02 emissions will not save our crumbling planet. When shopping we must have our dying world in mind, and it needs to start now.
Thankfully Selfridges is doing its bit to clean up our shopping habits with the latest cohort of sustainable design talent under its Bright New Things scheme. For AW19, Oxford Street’s luxury mecca will stock and support a slew of new designers who have an eco-conscious design ethos at their core, along with environmentally friendly beauty and homeware brands for the very first time.
Charlotte Knowles
Fresh from dressing Bella Hadid at the VMAs this past Sunday is Fashion East graduate Charlotte Knowles, who along with partner Alexandre Arsenault, has become a patron of certified mills that pay workers a fair wage and ensures the leather, wadding and shearling she sources is environmentally friendly. Master of the easy-breezy gypsy dress Anaak, and independent British designer Olivia Rose will also be supported by the retailer, the latter slowing down the production of clothing by hand-making each order at her studio in Edinburgh – talk about making clothes with the love and care!
Bright New Things is spearheading the Selfridges Buying Better Inspiring Change commitment to making at least 50% of the products it sells better for people and the planet by 2022. “It has never been more vital for business to take note of not only what our customers demand from us, but what our planet needs,” says Daniella Vega, Director of Sustainability at the retailer. And now with the inclusion of homeware innovators such as GoodWaste and a whole range of beauty brands joining the scheme in October – Selfridges are well and truly on their way to changing how we shop. The retail revolution is just getting started.
