Giddy up girls, we’re in Chantilly and Maria Grazia Chiuri has found the women of her dreams. And ours. They’re called escaramuzas, and the word literally means women riding a horse in a dress, at a Mexican rodeo. They opened the Dior Cruise 2019 extravaganza, trotting in formation Beyoncé would be proud) through the manège that we sat in, rain pouring down and a ribboned maypole fluttering in the breeze. A casual Friday night and ideal for a show being held at the Chantilly Stables. How right this felt. The Dior girls powered forward, this was a celebration of strong women, which is what Chiuri’s collections have been all about since she started two years ago. She loves to champion women and these were real champions. It was also a celebration of lace – well when in Chantilly. It was infused through the whole collection- edging the bubbling ruffles on tiered dresses, in capacious skirts, inlayed so intricately. That classic Dior Toile de Jouy was roaring here too, revved up with prints of slithering serpents and fierce tigers on tailored, tough coats and sweet silk dresses. Historic to the House stuff. Tulle bounced and flounced in skirts that were grounded in combat boots, the skinniest ties fell smartly on shirts and suit jackets were fitted impeccably, hourglass silhouetted. We must mention that hair was slicked in a ponytail – because the term is truly relevant here. Yes, she means business. The escaramuzas and their horses stayed in place throughout the whole show, centre stage. We love a theatrical Cruise show. And for all those dying to know, no, Lana Del Rey’s ‘Off to the Races’ did not anthem the show, but we will still be off to the Mexican rodeo and we will be chased all over town in our Dior Cruise ’19. A life we never thought we’d live but how ready we are.
