Watch: The Making Of Dior’s Embroidered Trench Coat

Amid the brilliance of Dior’s empowering AW18 show setting, it’s easy to ignore the individual journey that each garment had made to reach its moment under the runway lights- the sheer investment of skill and hours, not to mention the archival research that precludes any cutting of cloth. Given their beauty and elegance hails from somewhere beyond our very limited comprehension, you’d be forgiven for assuming that they have been stitched together by small mythical creatures in some alternate dimension. They haven’t. Take this embroidery trench coat for example, just one tiny part of the vast AW18 jigsaw, painstakingly constructed over the course of 250 hours at the esteemed Vermont ateliers, the Paris embroidery house acquired by Dior in 2013. The floral motifs, based on archival embroidery, are reproduced by hand-painting them on fabric, after which, each one is individually cut out and embroidered onto the panels of fabric used for the coat.
