Inside Manolo Blahnik’s New Exhibition, The Art of Shoes

I gag for a Manolo. Specifically: a Manolo Blahnik satin pointed toe slingback kitten heel. It does things to me that… well, I can’t go into that. It’s pre-watershed. Naturally Carrie Bradshaw was the first person to introduce me to the world of Manolo Blahnik, and ever since I have desperately tried to force my big hairy hobbit feet into his delicate creations. So far unsuccessfully – can you get lipo on a foot? But, if one can’t fit one’s foot into a pair, why not surround oneself with them? Hence why I’m sweaty palmed at the news of Manolo Blahnik: The Art of Shoes at The State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, their latest fashion exhibition. Even Carrie herself would be overcome when faced with 200 pairs of Manolos from the last 45 years – a selection that captures the essence of Mr Blahnik’s design DNA through his obsessions and inspirations which include architecture, art, botany, literature, cinema and the Eighteenth Century. If Russia is a bit of a slog, it will be embarking on a mini world tour, stopping off in Prague, Madrid and Toronto. We’ll get there somehow. Might even wedge myself into a slingback for the occasion…

Manolo Blahnik: The Art of Shoes is on at The Hermitage Museum from 11.05.2017 – 23.07.2017
