Those Scandis are at it again. And, by “at it” we mean (very quietly) taking over the world. Yes, as of this past weekend, Swedish masters of minimal garms, COS, are taking their love of all things artsy Stateside, to New York, where they will be supporting the Guggenheim Museum’s major retrospective of American painter, Agnes Martin (1912 – 2004). Fancy. Martin’s work, for those unfamiliar with the artist, bridged the Abstract Expressionist and Minimalist movements (words we may or may not have lifted that from the press release), her most famous creations being those pieces made up of criss-crossing lines, where the irregularities of painting by hand were left in by the artist. Natch, COS, being as they are very clued up on this sort of thing, have been fans of her work for a while – “known for her delicate colour palette, geometric lines and grids, her works have been a source of inspiration to the COS design team for many years.” But now, they are taking this inspo one step further by creating a very special capsule collection to accompany the exhibition – the COS design team drawing not only upon content of Martin’s work, but also the loose, billowing workwear she painted in. The collection, for both men and women, will be available in US stores and Guggenheim gift shop, but also, for those like us who are confined to the UK (or other world destinations) the collection will be available in selected stores worldwide as well as on cosstores.com. And, a percentage of the proceeds will go to the Agnes Martin Foundation. Hoorah!
The Agnes Martin exhibition is on view at the Guggenheim Museum 7 October 2016 – 11 January 2017
