The mood of late seventies Paris is infectious right now – maybe because it harks back to a time of unbridled hedonism never since seen, and an exciting, bubbling-up fashion scene. Isabel Marant referenced the era in her latest show, with plenty of PVC, clashing animal print and the princess of Paris punk Edwidge on her mood board, and inspiring her models looks from coiffed quiffy hair-do down. These were definitely clothes to have a good time in: brief cocktail dresses ruched and frilled and bowed, tight disco trousers in crackling synthetics, and signature Marant styles like the eternal, ever-cool biker jacket. This sort of stuff was only worn by the coolest chicks in 1979 – it’s the same today, with Marant’s effortless reinterpretations.
