Yohji Yamamoto: Ready-to-wear SS17

Yohji Yamamoto was strappy. Could we call it strapping, even? By which we mean, simply, that there were lots of straps on it. Straps are nice aren’t they? It’s reassuring to be strapped in. And could be, in some circumstances, considered a little kinky. Especially when, as here, said strappy clothing is teamed with a jauntily angled police hat. I mean, is it wrong to call Yohji kinky? Probably. One shouldn’t use such words to describe a man who is, and always has been, the daddy of Japanese fashion in Paris. This, his SS17 offering, was as usual, another mark of his genius. There was a sort of abstract romanticism to this – that mass of fabric, dotted with painted brushstrokes, a rich, regal palette of black and red. And amongst that, a study in deconstructed tailoring. This was, to put it bluntly, the sort of clothing that makes you want to literally set fire to your entire wardrobe, including the clothes you are wearing, and wear head-to-toe Yohji instead. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, for those who don’t want to see us strip down post-finale, we have yet to own the sort of money to make this possible. But, well, until then – well, a girl can dream.
