Grammy, Tony, Emmy, Oscar – she’s won them all. Now, Whoopi Goldberg is launching her own fashion line. Referencing the universally flattering geometric silhouettes that were popularised in the 1920s and 1930s, her brand Dubgee will bring Goldberg’s personal style ethos where comfort is key to the masses. The contemporary brand launches May 15th and will offer an assortment of tunics and dresses in bold, graphic designs.
The legendary actress and TV personality has been a polarising act on the red carpet for decades while solidifying her presence as one of the guests to watch at NYFW. Goldberg doesn’t shy away from experimental looks and embraces turning a look that is as glam as it is comfortable. In 2018, she made a splash at the CFDAs arriving in a bright fuchsia two-piece topped with a matching wide-brimmed hat. Dubbed a power suit, the belted top and wide-legged bottoms were designed by Christian Siriano, a designer she has avidly supported since the beginning. And who can forget the Vetements sweater Goldberg sported on The View, a pop-culture news hub which she hosts daily. With “May the bridges I burned light the way,” written across the chest, the brazen message was a perfect match for her career as a pioneering Black artist in addition to her style philosophy.
So what made her decide to finally take the leap and make fashion on her own terms? A trip to Greece. While vacationing there back in 2017, Goldberg couldn’t find the light and flowy pieces she was looking for. She shared with Business of Fashion that after feeling self-conscious with her body for what felt like the first time, she figured there were other women who might feel the same and decided to do something about it.
Dubgee was created with inclusivity at its core. Priding itself on accessible comfort for every woman, the brand will be available up to a size 3X with prices ranging from £70-300. There are also talks of Goldberg taking it a step further and launching a kids line in the future. That’s in addition to separate lines for home goods and dog apparel. She’s never been one to limit herself when it comes to career paths, so the forethought in expanding is fitting. In light of Goldberg taking the reigns of fashion design into her own hands, we take a look back at 10 of our favourite fashion moments courtesy of the icon who gave us Sister Act.
Dubgee by Whoopi Goldberg is launching online and in selected stores on May 15th.
