For recent and soon-to-be graduates of fashion and the arts, feeling stressed about the working landscape, financial fulfilment and future job opportunities is a really sad reality. To live in a country verging on financial crisis, it is easy to feel like you’ve busted your ass on a degree, only to be forced into the trenches as soon as you’re left to your own devices. Creative alumni are less likely to enter further education than graduates in any other industry and finding fitting, and paid positions especially can feel like a bit of a pipedream, leaving many of us wondering – where do I go from here?
Thankfully, in an effort to ease some of that post-university panic, Sarabande Foundation are hosting an in-person graduate survival guide called, What Now?, which includes of a series of in-person talks, in addition to one-on-one, drop-in, workshop sessions today and tomorrow (June 14 and 15).
Each What Now? session is designed to adhere to any and all creative practices and will feature guest speakers and industry professionals from a cross-section specialities within the artistic arena, with the aim of bolstering portfolios, debunking industry myths and increasing employment chances.
Attendees will have the opportunity to quell their concerns by hearing from a variety of experienced guest speakers on June 14, with business mentor Jeji Hong hosting a talk with staff from Dazed, Matches, Urban Outfitters and more. Tomorrow will bring opportunities for one-on-one, drop-in workshops with staff from 1 Granary, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, The Dots and more, in addition to a portfolio masterclass in the evening.
What Now? follows the huge success of similar talks at Sarabande over the past few years which were born out of necessity as the result of a huge loss in creative job opportunities post-Covid. So, keep your eyes peeled for more talks and events with people who have walked the creative path before, spanning many creative fields and with an array of accomplished hosts. 10 Magazine’s own Sophia Neophitou will be sharing her expertise in Sarabande’s So You Wanna Be A Stylist panel discussion next Monday, June 19. There is always a pot of gold and the end of the rainbow. Tickets are free and available to book here.
