With June’s menswear shows fast approaching, it’s been announced that Wales Bonner is off to Florence for Pitti Uomo. Following in the footsteps of Telfar, Jil Sander and Thebe Magugu, the former LVMH Prize winner will show her SS23 collection as the menswear trade show’s next guest designer, taking place June 14-17 at the Fortezza da Basso.
Bonner, who through the pandemic began showing digitally via the Paris Fashion Week official online channel, is famed for her poetic collections which come informed by intellectual explorations of the Black experience. The past two years have seen the lauded designer release a triptych of collections that map the connections between Britain and the Caribbean, along with continuing her buzzy, seventies-inspired collaboration with Adidas Originals.
“We have been familiar with the work of Grace Wales Bonner since she first debuted attracted first and foremost by her cultural sensibility and multidisciplinary approach that comes across in her collaborations with artists and other stylists, while appearing in each one of her collections,” says Lapo Cianchi, Pitti Immagine’s communication & special events director. “We then followed the evolution of her menswear fashion proposal, the gradual grafting of the elegant sartorial structure on the development of fashion design and sportswear elements, a style which, if borrowed from the world of music, could even be called soul…”
