Some things in life are just a given. Roses are red, violets are blue, and Tom Ford is Hollywood’s best friend. So it makes then total sense that the all-American designer departed his slot on the New York Fashion Week schedule only to fly across the continent and host an A-list spectacle just a couple of days before the biggest award ceremony of the year. As the chairman of the CFDA, this move might have been slightly controversial, but as a business man – it makes total sense. Ford has a pedigree in designing for powerful women and men with busy schedules which include a global premiere tour and no one can dispute his sharp suiting and stunning gowns. And after last night, with the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Miley Cyrus, Renée Zellweger, Catherine O’Hara and Demi Moore frowing, it doesn’t seem like anyone will even try.
In many ways, his AW20 collection was quintessential Tom Ford. Throwbacks to his low-slung, bodycon Gucci days and slinky rock’n’roll Saint Laurent moments were aplenty, mish-mashed into a nostalgic mix that will equally appeal to both millennials and those generations that were there the first time round. Ford also took care of what his women are doing before and after their red carpet outings – simple grey trackies and sweatshirts came interspersed in the collection, their sartorial potential fully explored by matching them with denim jeans and embroidered skirts. In addition to being an excellent designer, Ford is also an incredible stylist. A clear dedication to simplicity made these clothes sing without the bells and whistles. Confident, sexy and totally unapologetic – this is Ford’s idea of power dressing, one that many of Academy Award nominees might relate to in the coming days.
