When he was at the sensitive age of 28, Mister Ralph Lauren launched his own business. That was 1967 and the focus of the business were men’s ties. A year later, Lauren launched a full menswear line under the name Polo Ralph Lauren. The look was a little bit formal but inspired by sports, crafting what we still today relate to a vision of classic American style. At the same time, USA was going through a revolution of sorts. The hippie movement was quickly becoming part of the mainstream, yet was visually on the opposite side of the style spectrum from what Mr Lauren was working on. But it’s now, 50 years later, that those two worlds are finally joining arms. It’s official – Polo Ralph Lauren has gone psychedelic.
As part of the Polo Ralph Lauren SS19 collection, it’s a joining of preppy silhouettes and hippie colourways. Classic polo shirts, hoodies (with matching trousers) and tailored shirting have all gone through the traditional techniques that dates all the way back to the sixth century. As captured in our visual profile of Polo Ralph Lauren in Issue 62, it’s these opposites that create a uniquely contradictory vision. But we are indeed living in a world where opposites attract – so, why not celebrate that? Half a century later, yuppies and hippies are living in harmony.
