Up next: the new version of the now-classic Tambour Moon watch by Louis Vuitton – the GMT. For 15 years the original Tambour has been on the wrists of those who count in fashion land. When it first launched, critics were desperate for it not to be “all that”. It was, though. It was everything you’d expect from a house like Vuitton; in fact, I remember going on a tour of the factory to see those beauties being made. You’ve never seen as many people in white coats sitting in a series of lab-like rooms, eyes down, precisely and slowly fusing one gear to the next; testing and testing again and hand-stitching (of course) leather straps, with things going into big white machines that looked like they’d been beamed in from some space station, but were actually super-advanced testing machines for accuracy and pressure and all manner of things. It’s only after seeing the expertise that goes in to a Tambour, and any of the Louis Vuitton watches, that you really appreciate them. This new version is a cracker: the case is 41.5mm – the version here is brushed steel and pink gold. And that effect you see on the dial is achieved by firing sand at it and is a nod to the Damier house check we all know from their bags. And it’s powered by a self-winding calibre, which means you’ve more time to show yours off.
