Roland Mouret: Ready-to-Wear SS21

Like many creatives, Roland Mouret has embarked upon a period of intense reflection in response to the pandemic. He’s questioned everything from his wholesale business model to what his customers want from fashion now, with the intention of emerging from the crisis stronger and more focused. His SS21 collection, available now, direct-to-customer on his own website, is a first step in that direction.

“I questioned how we are living now and how we will be living over the next year, and considered what makes something the ‘right’ piece for this time. Each piece from the collection needs to have a strong place in your wardrobe, to work now but also in years to come. It’s finding the balance between something beautiful and recognisable yet with a certain level of practicality which makes it easily wearable,” says the designer.

He drilled down into his sensual DNA and history of wrapping, folding and flattering the body with sharp block-colour tailoring, origami-folded pencil skirts and dresses, relaxed wide-leg trousers and loosely-draped silk tops. “I thought about how to take something familiar and everyday and transform it into something unique. Women are looking for items which are both strong and yet disappear into an outfit, not so extravagant that you can’t wear often.”
