Ten’s To Do: Flick Through The Pages Of Rizzoli’s ‘Dolce & Gabbana ArteModa’

For over 40 years, designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have been purveyors of awe-inspiring fashion. Sultry black lace, tight corsetry and reams of leopard print have sat alongside the romantic gowns and the vibrant floral patterns that make up the design duo’s most beloved codes. At the heart of this unrestrained creative ethos is a deep connection to the art world, one that deepened further with the launch of the house’s haute couture chapters Alta Moda in 2012 and Alta Sartoria in 2015. Now, a new book titled Dolce & Gabbana ArteModa, published by Rizzoli, inspects this relationship, unpicking D&G’s longstanding tradition of reinterpreting great artistic masterpieces.

Described as “a book where art and fashion merge in a blend of knowledge, passion, creativity and beauty”, Dolce & Gabbana ArteModa details how art has been a well of inspiration for pair’s collections over the years. Often adopting an expressive style, Dolce & Gabbana are just as confident diving into the worlds of Renaissance masters like Leonardo Da Vinci, Sandro Botticelli, Titian and Raphael as they are more contemporary works from Salvador Dalí, Jackson Pollock, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. This reverence for art has been foundational for Alta Moda and Alta Sartoria, both in underpinning the rich opulence at the heart of each collection, and in more obvious nods – like a dress printed with Vincent Van Gogh’s Sunflowers and a cape embroidered with Michelangelo Merisi Da Caravaggio’s Basket of FruitBy drawing inspiration from some of the greatest painters and sculptors across time, Dolce & Gabbana emphasise the importance of being unbridled in your creativity, and its a message we should never forget.
