The fact Frank Sinatra crooned about how he loved Paris in the springtime, and when it sizzled and drizzled, over Ralph Lauren’s standing ovation bow after his spring/summer 2016 show said a lot. It said that Ralph is fashion’s Ol’ Blue Eyes, sure, but also that his latest collection had a Frenchy feel, with those eternally Gallic striped maletot tops and plenty of billowing chiffon gowns. The Tricolore dominated – but those are the colours of the Stars and Stripes as well as the French flag. Hence the fact the doublespeak of this collection had an accent of preppy Americana too, whose contemporary interpretation owes so much to Lauren’s work.
