Hip, hip, hooray! Our freedom is finally coming back this Monday. After a year and a half of being trapped indoors, we can, at last, enjoy the miserable British summertime in all its rainy glory. You wouldn’t think a raincoat would be a summer staple, but thanks to this country’s temperamental weather, you can’t leave anything to chance.
Luckily, this most recent round of menswear shows saw the raincoat be remixed by our favorite brands, from Hermés to Dior. From sleeveless parkas to hooded anoraks – we’re prepped and ready to venture out into the city rain (accompanied by a brolly, of course). Come rain or shine, here are the best raincoats of the season.
Hermès
Hermès designer Véronique Nichanian was loving teal this season, splashing the eye-catching hue across a wide array of menswear staples. A standout is the beautiful, hooded raincoat paired with rope fastenings and zippered chest closers. Want something even better? The iconic house also presented the rainy day staple spliced with both nylon and cargo fabrics, ideal for dressing you for rainy city getaways.
Courrèges
As Nicolas Di Felice continues to dig into Courrèges’ archive, he takes the brand’s classic mac coat as a piece to spotlight this season. Bringing in a raincoat version with longer hemlines and unexpected hoods remixed with waterproof nylon (a rarity for the 60-year-old brand), this chocolate-hued show opener is a must-have.
Burberry
Ricardo Tisci continues to re-shape classic Burberry codes by switching up the brand’s staples. For the brand’s SS22 collection, the brand took its classic trench coat and flipped it on its head, cutting the sleeves off, and creating a new version of the British classic. Its already waterproof shell is perfect for all weather conditions, and this sleeveless iteration can be worn in the hotter months, too.
Loewe
Jonathan Anderson’s latest Loewe menswear collection looks to the dancefloor, inspired by rave culture and the hunger to get back out-out again. The designer has crafted hooded parkas constructed out of cactus leather – a first for the brand – and along with drawstrings and silver hardware, the full-length coat is fitted with knee cutouts to allow you to party in style.
Dior
Dior’s collaboration with Travis Scott presented an infinite array of possibilities. With dozens of knockout pieces, a standout was a waterproof nylon, hooded anorak that came fitted with side compartments to slide your arms out of. These allow for a cape-like effect, further boosted by a high-low hemline. We don’t see this lasting long on the shelves come next summer.
1017 Alyx 9SM
Matthew Wiliams undoubtedly presented the largest variety of distinct coats for his SS22 collection. Mixing multiple different fabrics and textures together, he has hopped onto the raincoat trend this season. First presenting calf-length, hooded parkas fully constructed out of smooth black leather and cargo. Mixed, translucent nylon and cargo fabric hooded parkas speak to that signature Alyx utilitarianism. The designer also took a bright yellow hue to padded, collared raincoats paired with matching sweaters and nylon shorts.
