Consistent. That is merely one adjective that could be used to describe the work of Per Götesson. Poetic is another, tender a third. Since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2016, the Sweden-born, London-based designer has been using denim to subvert traditional ideals surrounding masculinity.
His latest collection – titled For Lillie – is a tribute to his grandmother, who sadly passed earlier this year. She taught him everything he knew. From his craft and hard work, to his immaculate eye for detail.
The deeply personal set of looks sees the designer revisit beloved silhouettes from previous collections – acid-washed t-shirts that swoop low below the groin or knits that are sliced up the torso – as well more innovative takes on classic denim wear. Swollen tracksuits with chunky waistbands are spliced with denim panels from the thigh down and the designer even had a go at crafting a denim single-breasted blazer. This season also saw Götesson produce his first logo t-shirt, featuring the rope tattoo that can be found on his left forearm, repurposed as a badge of honour.
As always, the collection is dotted with intricate jewels courtesy of Götesson’s partner and on-going collaborator Husam El Odeh – who made a crown from pieces of a chandelier similar to the one that hung in Götesson’s grandmother’s home. He also aligned t-shirts with a bundle of silver chachkies, displayed like a Boy Scout sash. A fitting tribute to someone who impacted his life so much, this is a collection Götesson should be proud of.
