There’s something quite romantic about Gosha Rubchinskiy’s casting call for his January AW17 show in Kaliningrad, Russia. A bit like the assembly of the fellowship in Rivendell, minus the waterfalls and elves, boys from far and wide pilgrimaging across frozen lands and icy waters to answer the call of Gosha. And, when you hear the names of some of the places these boys journeyed from – Volgograd, Krasnodar and Ufa, to name but a few – you could be forgiven for imagining a Middle Earth scenario. And now, in this special 9-minute film, created by INRUSSIA, you can watch the stories of three hopeful youths as they chase the dream of walking for Gosha at his homecoming show. There’s a level of surrealism to it – a boy tinkers out a version of ‘Killing Me Softly’ on a piano during casting, models crowd round a tiny sink to have their hair washed with a kettle, and groups of boys roam abandoned apartment blocks finding the best spots for their tags. All feels like it could be a short scene from a Tarkovsky film. Could there be any higher compliment? This is the story of real people like Andrey, Ivan and Kirill – boys in Russia today.
