Before you ask, we are not going to write about some weird food additive or fancy chemical or some strange shorthand for something to do with space, despite the fact that when we mistyped MSGM into Google an odd Russian website came up, displaying an image of some Russian skyline that had us momentarily wondering whether aliens are invading the earth and, if so, should we be preparing? Should be learning about their culture and adopting some of their traditions? Should we be wearing white? Before the whole mistype Google fiasco, we had been looking for MSGM, the Vogue Italia talent winner, the purveyor of fine Italian garments that seem more English in their off-ness than Italian in their slickness. It seems, to us at least, that MSGM may be the only ones who have accepted that aliens live among us and have prepared with the most exquisite white dress this side of Mars. Really, it’s a rather simple dress. A sleeveless trapeze, growing in width from the shoulder to mid-thigh, in a textured white satin organza. The surface looks the way clouds do when you’re flying above them. Or the way they look from outer space when you’re about to break through the atmosphere. More than that, though, the suitability of white is down to the meaning of white. White is the colour of purity. White means kindness. White is Monday’s colour. White daisies are a symbol of loyal love. White is not even a colour, but the manifestation of the presence of all colour – the complete energy of light. It stands for wholeness and completion. In many cultures it represents openness and truth. We will assume that our friends from lands far away interpret the colour the same way we do. Most aliens, we gather from having watched many sci-fi films, are white. They never seem to be attacking each other, but only us. Notice how, in films, when they land on earth, they are never greeted by humans wearing white. Only hostile army green. So is it really any surprise when they aim their lasers in our direction? The key to intergalactic peace, therefore, must be to approach our sisters from another galaxy dressed only in white. MSGM white. Not only does it symbolise our good intentions, it also shows us how to be a stylish, fashion-forward and forward-thinking planet. Have the nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize been decided on yet?
