Simone Rizzo and Loris Messina are known for putting on unconventional fashion shows that have impact. It’s one of the reasons why the former Sunnei designers landed the Moschino gig. This is a house where quirky is a code, alongside wit and catwalk high jinx.
On the rooftop of a high rise carpark near the airport, their Moschino era began with crowds of ordinary folk striding along like it was rush hour, some with dogs or pushing bicycles, other holding kids. against this flow of 400 street-cast extras, came the Moschino models in striking contrast to the regular folk passing them by. “Reignite Moschino without imitating it,” said the designers of their approach. That meant swerving the pastiche, camp and visual jokes of the Jeremy Scott and Adrian Appiolaza eras, in favour of a bright contemporary wardrobe. Bubble hemmed mini skirts, mustard yellow macs, blanket-style ponchos, and graffiti tees and hand drawn plaid blazers all fed into this bright, wearable mix. Along the way, they delivered some fun. There were Coulottes and pencil skirts with swishing raffia hems. One dress was padded at the back to create a Cardi B-style urn-shaped silhouette a male model wore a padded muscle tee, and full skirts bounced down the catwalk with ballooning panniers. One model wore a black cat shaped clutch perched on her shoulder, another wore a T-shirt printed with the message “Good Luck”. It was a message delivered, like much of the collection, with sincerity not irony. As the designers said, they want to “speak to real people.”
