Me And My Watch: Michael Ariano On His 1970s Patek Philippe Gondolo

You can tell a lot about a man from the watch he’s wearing. Luckily for us, the gents featured here know what to choose when it comes to the best wrist candy out there.

Michael Ariano, global head of PR at Marc Jacobs

What watch are you wearing?

A 1970s Patek Philippe 18k Gold Gondolo Mesh 3528/3.

Tell us about it.

It’s a vintage bracelet watch from the 1970s that had to be extended to fit my wrist. I think it originally was made for someone with, like, a six-inch wrist.

How did you come to own it?

It was a gift from the guys I work with, Marc, Nick [Newbold] and Sean [Donovan]. [Ariano’s boss, executive manager and executive assistant, respectively.]

What’s the story behind it?

I’m really not big into watches, but I’ve always talked about wanting a vintage gold mesh Patek, and randomly one day Nick and Sean found one, luckily right around the time of my birthday!

What do you love about it and why is it your favourite?

I only have two watches, but this is my favourite as I like that sort of ‘mobster-grandpa’-style watch. It reminds me of the one in Scorsese’s The Irishman.

When do you wear it and what do you wear it with?

I’m sure it was originally intended to be a dress watch, but I don’t really subscribe to saving things for special occasions; I wear it daily with a gold Italian chain bracelet and often a mix of rings.

What would be a dream watch for you to own?

I’d love one of those Cartier ladies’ watches from the ’40s or ’50s that are hidden to look like a bracelet.
