Long time Ten contributor and all-round loveable rogue Max Blagg will be hosting a reading of his latest book, Walkabout NYC, this coming Friday. The book, which has been almost a decade in the making, is a haunting and soulful tour around lower Manhattan, in which Blagg recalls the history, people and incidents of the city he has called home for over forty years. We have a fairly good idea of the sort of licentious dealings Mr Blagg gets up to after dark, and indeed in broad daylight, but this is a man with more racy anecdotes and saucy tales than ten ordinary folk would hope to accumulate over a lifetime. Not only that, but he’s very good at telling them.
The book is a limited edition of 300 signed and numbered copies, published by Shallow Books NYC, and partially inspired by the work of artist Barney Kulok. After Aperture magazine commissioned Blagg to write about Kulok’s Wi-Fi paintings (go Google), Blagg was put on to the idea of mapping the memories and characters of the routes and places evoked in Kulok’s work. So for all our Big Apple readers, we are a) very envious of where you live, and b) highly suggest you head down to James Fuentes Gallery (55 Delancey St) at 7pm this Friday to hear this masterful storyteller recount his connection to the city.
