Marques’Almeida: Resort SS19

Who can believe it’s only been seven years since Marques’Almeida first emerged onto the London fashion scene? After their SS19 show, we certainly can’t. They’ve done so much with their time too – started as part of Fashion East, won the LVMH prize, and now they are showing in Paris. All that, and they still communicate the same narrative they have been since 2011. Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida are all the emerging designer goals in one.

All the way from Brick Lane, they have now arrived at the sophisticated Avenue du Président Wilson. But to say that they have completely abandoned the aesthetics of London for some Parisian chic would be a faux pas.  Centring the M’A girl in all that they do, they brought back all of their best hits – fringe, denim, leather, fisherman stitchings and stripes à la Beetlejuice. From a combination of grunge and 1970s styling, Marques’Almeida remains true to their Portuguese heritage visible through the movement of the garments.

This is a refreshing take on femininity. Slip dress draped off of the shoulder, studded sunnies, oversized hoodies… All billowing on a cast of your classic M’A girls. That’s where this husband-and-wife duo hits gold. A sense of community, no matter where they are, comes through as the defining factor. And apparently, this community also loves to shop. The collection is actually launching in stores in the next month, as part of their new see-now-buy-in-a-bit policy. On that note, we’re off to join the queue!
