Yesterday morning those working from Ten Towers simultaneously dropped what they were doing and crowded round an iPhone to see Saint Laurent’s AW19 campaign. Obviously there’s very little that would normally tear us away from our important work, but Anthony Vaccarello’s Instagram announcement certainly had that pulling power. Keanu Reeves in Saint Laurent photographed by David Sims. Take a minute to enjoy. Captured in monochrome, the 54 year old cult movie icon stands with left hand firmly planted in the pocket of his jeans, dressed in a patterned shirt and boxy leather jacket giving his best gentle glare into the lens. What’s not to love?
Now Saint Laurent have got us all Reeves’d up we thought we’d take this opportunity to celebrate 10 times Keanu absolutely killed it. From his relaxed all-American styles in breakout role as teenage Tod in Parenthood (1989), to the surf style of Point Break (1991) and ready-for-action getups in the high-octane Speed (1994), he’s a pretty versatile guy. Keanu epitomised the grungy shaggy-haired high-school slacker in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures (1990) and it’s sequel the following year (the franchise is set for a comeback with Bill & Ted Face the Music announced for release next year). Then there’s his 2013 directorial debut the Man of Tai Chi, a martial arts film inspired by the life of his friend the stuntman Tiger Chen, in which he wears a wardrobe of Giorgio Armani. Or his animated appearance in A Scanner Darkly (2006) alongside Winona Ryder, Woody Harrelson and Robert Downey Jr.
No Keanu roundup would be complete, however, without a mention of the film that formed the basis of all of our Y2K sci-fi style fantasies in The Matrix (1999), serving sleek chic agent style throughout. Off-screen Keanu is also pretty consistent, opting for a classic jeans and t-shirt combo as the bassist and backing vocalist of alt-rock group Dogstar and has worn pretty much exactly the same outfit on the street for the best part of 25 years – black t-shirt, relaxed tailoring suit and brown boots. Finally the Sad Keanu meme warrants a mention, which swept the web in 2010 after the star was caught sullenly eating a sarnie by a pap. Need more Keanu and looking for that regular fix? Look no further than the Twitter account Keanu Doing Things. No thanks necessary.
