You’ve all heard of Big Dick Energy. The fashion equivalent is Big Show Energy, something JW Anderson delivers in abundance. He filled the huge Roundhouse venue with friends, fashion VIPs and fans, all fabulously decked out in his designs. Then he whacked up the volume on the soundtrack and sent out a collection that oozed creative confidence. The moulded hoodie and shorts that opened the show was akin to a wearable sculpture although the supple leather version that came out after showed just how deftly the designer straddles the art/fashion divide. Casual and statement sit comfortably together on the JW Anderson catwalk. The designer described the collection as a mix of practical and playful, where surprising proportions brought something fresh to wardrobe staples like cargo pants, bombers and blazers. Macrame mini dresses, padded, ‘sleeping bag’ separates, and silky hoodies worn with crystallised mini skirts were in the mix along with slouchy tailoring and on-the-money accessories (woven loafers, unstructured leather bags and fisherman’s sandals). You could hear the tills ringing as each look strode by.
