At Jil Sander, creative director Simone Bellotti continued to find new ways to challenge the brand’s minimalist codes, this time by embracing imperfection. For SS27, the designer took the familiar building blocks of an enduring wardrobe – tailoring, knitwear and considered silhouettes – and gave them a sense of movement. Jackets were twisted, their fabrics crumpled and hemlines shifted. Sculptural volumes punctuated the offering, lending an unexpected lightness to otherwise angular garments. Menswear-inspired codes crossed over into the womenswear pieces, softened by glimpses of skin and flashes of colour. Against a palette of grey and muted neutrals, dashes of pinks, purples and yellows – coming in the form of tights, elongated pointed shoes and fold-over bags – broke up the looks, however stopped short at an unnecessary disruption of its tidy tone. Bellotti’s take on imperfection was less about abandoning Jil Sander’s precision than finding new ways to express it.
