Three people walk into a room. One is Aussie pop princess Kylie Minogue, the other is leggy supermodel Mona Tougaard and the last is fashion journo extraordinaire Tim Blanks. What’s the occasion? A JW Anderson campaign, of course. And this season, Jonathan Anderson’s namesake brand is embracing the ethos on which it is built – community, craft and the relationship between people and things.
The assortment of imagery, shot by Heikki Kaski, flits between still lifes of ceramic plates and wooden mice to more fashion-focused shots featuring a diverse cast of Anderson’s friends and collaborators, speaking to the shift in the brand’s approach over the last year. No longer defining itself as just a producer of ready-to-wear, it instead focuses on “objects of elevated craftsmanship,” with these images highlighting the eclectic range of products the brand has been working on this season.
Lace and wool are crocheted into dresses that oscillate between fluid midis and bolder, statement looks. Denim pulled in from Japan forms shrugging, patchwork jeans and rich, bright colours are deployed through knitwear crafted in Ireland and Scotland. Revered chairmakers Jason Mosseri and Mac Collins stand next to some of their own statement furniture, whilst artist Polly Lyster models alongside hand-dyed textiles from her archive. The rest of the cast represent an ode to skill – each honing an art form they have developed in their lives outside this shoot. Actor Daryl McCormack and actress Ruth Wilson also star, for example.
As ever, Anderson hasn’t taken himself too seriously, both in the designs and creative direction of the campaign. The word ‘Porn’ is emblazoned across T-shirts and tote bags, whilst a man in his birthday suit (bits and bobs covered by gold stars, of course) pops up on a T-shirt.
It’s fun, refreshing and quintessentially JW Anderson. And we’re ready to drink it all up.
