Jason Wu: Ready-to-Wear SS18

Jason Wu-d us with flowers. Which was nice of him. XXL bunches stood on concrete plinths along the catwalk and on the clothes, delicate and ditsy floral prints, pieced and strapped together like handkerchiefs. Those dresses hung off the limb-y models very nicely, exposing a midriff and a shoulder in a sort of sexy-but-not-inappropriate manner. Undercurrent was tougher though. I want to say there was something of the parachute to some of the dresses but that’s not quite right – the silhouette was slinky, not roomy, but the gowns fell away into tie fastenings that lended an almost utilitarian bent. Well, as utilitarian as a very expensive cocktail dress can be, but there you go.

An aviator-style jumpsuit had an almost military comparison. That said, Jason’s trademark is pretty gowns for pretty girls, and that remained the brand message today – whether those in summery seersucker, that draped and twisted effortlessly around the body, or full-length pleated chiffon gowns with almost toga-like details. All in all, a satisfying collection that Wu’s fangirls (there are many) will eat right up.
