Hermès: Menswear AW17

There’s something to be said for a classic. And who does classic better than Hermès? You can practically smell the luxury. Taste it. Shows that, refreshingly, are about nothing other than some bloody great clothes. No obscure references here – as the notes for their AW17 offering read: “vetement-objet: rhythm of silhouettes with contrasting volumes, fullness, suppleness, asymmetry, stripes, checks.” Which, in real terms, meant a masterclass in outerwear – from the trench coat that opened, slightly curved along the fastening, loosely cinched at the waist all the way to a sportier bomber in leather and suede, or the belted aviator-style jacket in butter-soft turquoise leather. I mean, it feels like we’ve said this a lot over the last few weeks, but what’s once more – was there a touch of the Seventies to this? Maybe it’s those roll-neck jumpers worn tucked into trousers, lightly gathered on the waistband and flared a little at the ankle, the palette of muted autumnal hues. Casualwear, really, but the sort of casualwear only achieved with an XXL bank account or generous sugar daddy. And of course, it goes without saying, lovely bags. A big felt number. A boy Birkin? And a bumbag. Are they allowed again? Well, if Hermès say so…
