Here it is, the next in Polo Ralph Lauren’s Limited Edition Polo Series. I mean, Polo do lots of things very well, but they are awfully good at a polo – clue’s in the name, isn’t it? Avid 10 readers will know this is the latest in a series that has seen us transported from Hawaii to Elk Ridge, a homage to the trekking outdoorsmen of the New York State wilderness. Now, it’s time to get collegiate. We don’t really do “jocks” in England – we just have people who are good at P.E. – but even to our untrained eyes this has jock written all over it.
Lesson in American history: these are inspired by classic letterman jackets of the 1950s and 60s – a tradition in which the sporty types were awarded for their sporty exploits by way of a cloth initial that would be sewn onto said jacket, to advertise the fact that they were really very good at sports. And what’s a piece of collegiate apparel without some emboldening Latin inscribed on it? ‘Fortis tigrim’ or ‘tiger strong’, is what adorns this particular piece. It’s very us.
