It’s that time of year again… You put on your pumpkin costume, wine glass in hand, and stare in the mirror only to realise that going trick-or-treating on Halloween is no longer cute but just plain creepy. So, why not make October 31st the night you turn the hottest off-the-catwalk look? Below are 10 alternative ways to dress up this Halloween, inspired by some of the latest catwalk collections.
Casey Becker via Moschino Cruise 2020
Get your scream on. Jeremy Scott has given us since February to decide on our Halloween costumes after paying homage to the holiday in the Moschino cruise 2020 show. Suki Waterhouse kicked off the L.A.-set show in a recreation of Drew Barrymore’s iconic cameo from the opening scene of Wes Craven’s Scream as the damsel with exactly 6 minutes of screen life. Other characters Scott borrowed from horror films and added to his line-up included the Grady twins from The Shining, pre-pig-blood Carrie along with a sexy mummy and a hot scarecrow. However, we prefer to pay homage to all the platinum-headed victims from the lineage of Hollywood horrors. And if we learnt anything from 1990s Barrymore – avoid your landline or dare to scream!
Brexit Funeral Chic via Yohji Yamamoto SS20
If we were to consider the current political climate in the UK, there’s only one way to dress. Rather appropriately, the official date of our country’s departure from the EU is set to coincide with Halloween. Thankfully, Yohji Yamamoto has given us plenty of inspiration as what to wear on the impending day of reckoning. You can host your own Brexit funeral, serving Bo-jitos on tap and dressed in funeral black. And that big ol’ hat will make sure no one clocks the tears in your eyes.
Queen of Hearts via Comme de Garçons SS20
Why is a raven like a writing desk? Still not sure… But what we do know is that Rei Kawakubo provided an indisputable revival of the Queen of Hearts from Lewis Caroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland with her SS20 women’s show for Comme de Garçons. Go forth and paint the roses red in homage to the scary matriarch of the Wonderland. You can’t get a halloween hairdo more off-your-head than Julien d’Ys’s dystopian up-do, similar to the one Helena Bonham-Carter rocked in Tim Burton’s adaptation of the story. Whooo are youuu this Hallows Eve?
Cruella de Ville via Balenciaga SS20
Cruella de Ville: PETA’s most wanted criminal and arguably one of the chicest villains in film history made a distinctive appearance in the Balenciaga SS20 show. Demna Gvasalia’s take on de Ville is slightly less vulture-esque, but unmistakably alludes to the 1961 animation 101 Dalmatians. A prequel to the 1996 remake with Glenn Close is currently being filmed in London with Emma Stone playing the title character, set to be released in Summer 2021. We can only hope she will, just like us this Halloween, be wearing Balenciaga.
The Policeman at Vetements SS20
Woop woop its the sound of a Vetements-inspired halloween. If you’ve been a part of the Extinction Rebellion protests over the past few weeks, you might see fit going as a policeman this Halloween. Or perhaps your friends are planning a Village People group costume? The Vetements policeman is off duty, getting his maccies in order to refuel after a full day of arresting and incarcerating baddies. You have the right to remain silent until you drink your body weight in Bloody Marys.
Lydia Deetz & Beetlejuice via Ashley Williams and Balmain SS20
Consider this the perfect couple’s costume. Lydia Deetz and Beetlejuice, an iconic on-screen duo with timeless style according to the SS20 collections. 30 years after the original flick, Ashley Williams featured a sheer bejewelled spiderweb top with a matching bag, an outfit we expect Lydia Deetz to lust over and demand in every shade… of black that is. This September, Olivier Rousteing sent down the catwalk a range of outfits fit for a whole cast of Beetlejuices in his SS20 Balmain collection. Monochrome stripes were aplenty. That’s a major upgrade for the disheveled Netherworldian spirit.
Bella Hadid opened the Mugler show in an outfit reminiscent of a dressed-up Frank’n’Furter on their way to wed the perfect plaything. The blazer-meets-underwear combo is a chicer take on fashion choices most go for on the last day of October. Simply dress for work but skip on the skirt and you’ll have yourself a very Mugler Halloween. Brad! Janet! Dr. Scott! Rocky! Mugler, uh, huh, huh…
The Joker at Walter Van Beirendonck SS20
Jared Leto, Cameron Monaghan, Heath Ledger. Also – Walter Van Beirendonck? This mod-esque colour block makeup by Inge Grognard is an abstract variation of the iconic Chelsea smile of the Joker. In this rendition, the bloody red extends beyond the face onto wigs styled by Charlie Le Mindu. A modern spin on an immortal Halloween classic which will make sure you don’t look like just another cheap take on Joaquin Phoenix’s performance.
Miss Havisham at Alexander McQueen SS20
Heartbroken this October? Stop dusting, acquire some candle sticks, a veil, a wedding dress and voilà! Turn yourself into the most memorable jilted bride in all of literature with a little help of Sarah Burton. Miss Havisham from Charles Dickens’ 1871 novel Great Expectations now wears Alexander McQueen SS20, a stunning ruffled white dress fit for descending into madness. Plus you can spend the whole night bitching about your ex, even if they didn’t really leave you to decay in a mansion paused in time… Or did they?
Black Swan at Thom Browne men’s SS20
Nutcracker, eat your heart out. Thom Browne’s SS20 show began with a mesmerising performance from ballet dancer James Whiteside who spun and leapt between the theatrical set in a seersucker co-ord bringing together hyper-masculine and feminine elements. All this drama brings back memories of watching Natalie Portman in Black Swan, with the addition of breaking down binary boundaries. Regardless the gender, Halloween your time to spin!
