Ever wondered what are the tunes blasting out of Alessandro Michele’s speakers at the Gucci atelier in Milan? Is it the latest Florence + The Machine album? Or perhaps a Monteverdi opera? Just based on the rich book of inspirations hiding behind each of his collections, it’s almost impossible to decipher what Michele’s personal playlist consists off. But lucky for all of us, the guessing game has come to an end as Gucci have just launched their #GucciGig project. Looking behind the scenes and into the backstage creative process of making the brand, this digital campaign is inspired by the rich visual tradition of festival, concerts and people on the stage. Michele’s idea of Gucci has been part of the music conversation from the beginning, exclusively dressing musicians like Lana del Rey, Harry Styles and Florence Welch, as well as a whole bunch of other talented performers. There’s something about pussy bows and sequins that looks so good under a spotlight, so there’s no wonder so many have opted out for Gucci glam when it came to their touring lewks.
Now, Michele invited 12 musicians and artists to take part in #GucciGig and create visuals (both photographs and moving image) that merge their personal aesthetics with the brand’s. The only requirement: you have to be wearing a piece from the rich Gucci eyewear collection. As you can imagine, the lineup is made out of an eclectic bunch, both in the context of genres as well as the cultural background of the musicians. From punk and nu-soul to indie pop and trance with everything else in between – it’s like the best evert music festival that never was. The musicians taking part in the projects are: Alex Cameron, Yves Tumor, Curtis Harding, Amyl and the Sniffers (lead singer Amy Taylor and bass player Gus Romer walked the Gucci AW19 fashion show and feature in the brand’s Pre-Fall 2019 campaign), Cole Alexander of Black Lips, Lou Doillon, Jehnny Beth, Kikagaku Moyo, Weyes Blood, Populus, Connie Constance and Merry Lamb Lamb.
In addition to the stunning visuals, each of the artists were asked to curate a playlist of their own musical inspirations in celebration of the launch of Gucci’s Spotify channel. Now, you can literally listen to the sound of the Italian glamour as told through the vocal chords and instruments of global creatives. And we can tell you right now – it’s music to our ears…
