Giuseppe Di Morabito is kind of like fashion’s equivalent to Benjamin Button. Instead of following the traditional format of starting small and working your way up to a prime-time spot on the fashion month calendar, Di Morabito’s business has already seen revenues of almost €10 million in 2024 and has dressed the likes of Rihanna, Zendaya and even Cher in his sexy, lingerie-inspired pieces. In turn, despite this being his debut runway show, Di Morabito slotted right into a sought-after Friday slot on the Milanese calendar, drumming up a front row packed with some of fashion’s most revered figures as he went.
The impetus for this seemingly sudden decision to start staging catwalks? “A life-changing event,” Di Morabito writes in the show notes. Without disclosing exactly what this was, he notes it encouraged him to stop and reflect. The collection, entitled Alone With The Stars, was the result of a period of deep, personal introspection for the Italian designer that came after this undisclosed watershed moment. Using the collection to reinterpret historical elements “through a contemporary lens”, representing the journey from his own past to present, what manifested was the perhaps one of the more surprising features of Milan Fashion Week – Ameca, the “most advanced humanoid robot in the world”.
With screens showcasing Ameca stationed around the catwalk and a performance interlude where Yasmin Wijnaldum mirrored the movements of a real-life version of the robot, the clothes also embraced this futuristic tone. Comprised of both womenswear and menswear, the offering was rooted in elevated staples like slick blazer dresses and trench coats that tied at the waist whilst never losing its creative flair. Metal bodices and a series of crinkled leather pieces, plus a healthy dose of glittering silver coated onto bags, tights and shoes gave the collection an injection of glamour that Di Morabito has become known for. Although Di Morabito isn’t exactly fledgling, this show and collection prove he’s learning the ropes of runway with relaxed ease.
