No one does classy like Giorgio Armani. After a stellar spectacle featuring Robbie Williams in a sequinned skirt at Emporio Armani, the master of Italian glamour is back again, but now with the grown-up sister of the two brands. At Giorgio Armani SS19, with the collection titled La Forma De Colore (Italian for “the shape of colour”), a clear vision came through. The tuxedos, the gowns, the perfectly put-together daywear… It was all the lush Armani silhouettes we know and love, but now dipped into buckets of the most off-beat hues, making you double-take as each of the models walked out.
Instead of looking at Pantone’s boards for inspo, Mister Armani paves his own colourways. The show opened with a section of the cleanest slate grey, later going into shades of soft blues and pinks which were at points almost indistinguishable from each other. It looked like just a tiny drop of colour fell into the whitest of whites. As the collection continued into evening-wear, there came the brightest fuschias and aquamarines, overlaid in iridescent organza. Walking out on the catwalk like emerging from the deep ocean waters, the models-turned-Armani-mermaids had a sense of mysteria about them. Wherever they were going, they were getting there in the most fabulous way possible. Riffing off last year’s Oscar-winning film “The Shape of Water”, this collection was a beautiful ode to aquatic life, proving yet again that after decades of experience, the eye of Armani is as sharp as ever.
