During his tenure at Dior, Kim Jones was in a continuous design dialogue with Christian Dior himself, cleverly remixing the hallmarks of the haute couturier to bring an air of romance and grandeur to his modern menswear wardrobe. In his final collection for the house, after seven years at the helm of Dior Men, Jones turned to the maison’s Ligne H AW54 collection for inspiration. The designer said he was drawn to its “graphic and angular” moments, “which felt eminently transferable into the men’s world”.
Throughout the collection, flourishes of ornate, 18th-century menswear and 19th-century utilitarian codes were fused with inspiration plucked from the Dior archive. Think cocooning opera coats tied into a bow at the shoulders, handsome Bar jackets and long- line blousons frosted with crystals that mimic rain splashes. Elsewhere, coats were transformed into floor-sweeping skirts that danced along the contours of the waist, while a powder-pink kimono was showered with silver embellishment. Darting between masculine and feminine tropes, elegant occasions of the past became tethered to the now.
